A reported stolen American Medical Response ambulance, with one of its wheels missing, was found Tuesday facing a dirt berm next to an industrial-area parking lot in Perris, authorities said.

The behind-the-wheel suspect fled but was arrested a short time later.

There were no injuries to anyone involved, an email from the Riverside County Sheriff Department said. There also were no reports that any patient was inside the ambulance.

AMR employees reported one of their ambulances stolen at 10 a.m. Tuesday from the 13000 block of Perris Blvd. in Moreno Valley. About 90 minutes later, people reported seeing an ambulance being driven too fast, sheriff’s deputies said.

A California Highway Patrol incident log also said the ambulance caused a collision with a truck and hit the side of a building before coming to a stop at the parking lot in an industrial area of Perris. Sheriff’s deputies found it in the 400 block of Harley Knox Boulevard.

At the scene was the damaged AMR ambulance, right-front wheel gone. A deputy on a radio call from the scene said the ambulance company should be told “it’s going to need to be towed.”

Nearby was a Kenworth tractor-trailer with what appeared to be significant front-end damage.

The identity of the suspect and the circumstances of how the ambulance was taken were under investigation Tuesday afternoon.

An AMR representative did not immediately return a call.
