Three people were sent to the hospital after a 13-year-old boy crashed an ambulance while he was being evaluated at the Central Coventry Fire Station 7 Thursday night.

According to the Coventry Police Department, the incident happened on Route 117 Thursday evening. The boy, who police say has autism, was being evaluated when he got into the ambulance, drove it across the road and down an embankment, hitting a motorcyclist driving by in the process.

Police said the keys were in the ignition when the boy drove off with the ambulance. The department tells Eyewitness News it is protocol to keep the keys in the ignition.

Police said the boy, the motorcyclist and a firefighter were injured during the incident. All three were taken to the hospital, but the firefighter has since been released. They are all expected to be OK, only suffering minor injuries.

Route 117 in the area of the fire station was blocked off to traffic for a couple hours as crews removed the ambulance. An Eyewitness News crew on scene says the embankment is so steep, the roof of the ambulance was at street level.

Police said the ambulance is only two months old and will be briefly out of service after sustaining only minor damage from the crash.
