Man arrested after stealing ambulance from Vanderbilt

(WILX) – UPDATE: The Lansing Police Department has identified the suspect in the theft of an ambulance from Sparrow Hospital Monday.

Jonas Encarnacion, 50, has been charged with one count of unlawful driving away of an automobile. The ambulance was taken from the hospital emergency bay parking area.

Shortly after the theft, the ambulance was located traveling on S. Pennsylvania Ave. near I-96 ramps. LPD officers performed a traffic stop and made contact with the driver.

No one was hurt and no damage was reported during the theft. The ambulance was returned to the Lansing Fire Department. The Ingham County Prosecutors office is pursuing criminal charges.

Encarnacion was arraigned in 54-A District court in front of Magistrate Millmore. His bond was set at $3,000.

Encarnacion’s next court dates is scheduled on Nov. 6 at 9:00 a.m. in 54-A District in front of Judge Ward.

The Lansing Police Department have confirmed that an ambulance was stolen from Sparrow Hospital. The incident happened around 5:50 p.m.

Sparrow Hospital Spokesman John Foren says that a patient left the hospital in the ambulance without being officially released.

Authorities currently have a 51-year-old male in custody. His identity is unknown.

There are no reported injuries. Additionally, the motive behind why the ambulance was stolen is not known either.
