A thief stole an SUV belonging to the Fort Worth Fire Department at the scene of a house fire in Fort Worth early Thursday and then crashed it into gas pumps at a nearby 7-11, officials said.

While firefighters were extinguishing the blaze at 6404 Bay Lake Drive in northwest Fort Worth, a thief jumped into the battalion chief’s SUV and drove off, Fire Department spokesman Kyle Clay said.

Soon afterward, he crashed into the gas pumps at a 7-11 under construction on Cromwell-Marine Creek Road and was arrested just south of there, Clay said.

“[He] was out there screaming that his wife was inside the house,” Clay said of the man, identified as Robert Kellsall, 47.

Kellsall directed firefighters to a window and then wandered over to the battalion chief’s SUV, hopped in and took off.

Turns out he didn’t live in the house and there was nobody inside. The owner was not around, Clay said. There was no address listed for Kellsall in the police report.

After he plowed into the gas pumps at the 7-11, Kellsall got out of the SUV and fled. Callers reporting a suspicious person in the neighborhood alerted police to his whereabouts and he was arrested, Clay said.

He faces charges of vehicle theft, interfering with public duties and public intoxication, according to the police report.
