An Athens man was arrested Tuesday afternoon for felony auto theft after getting caught trying to steal an ambulance.

According to an Athens-Clarke County police report, a mechanic for North Georgia Medical Transport Inc. was on his break when he heard an ambulance beeping like it was in reverse.

He ran outside and yelled at the male driving the ambulance to stop. The man stopped and pulled the ambulance back into it’s original position, the report reads.

When police arrived on the scene, the suspect was still in the area drinking a 24-ounce can of beer. He told police that he had money for Christmas shopping, but did not want to walk all the way to the store, the report reads.

Walter James Campbell Jr., 40, was then arrested and charged with felony auto theft, driving under the influence, open container, among other charges.
