A stolen San Antonio Fire Department ambulance plowed into two cars early Saturday morning in the Medical Center, injuring two people, according to police.

Officers responded to a call about a crash at 3:19 a.m., Saturday near the corner of Fredericksburg and Wurzbach roads.

When they arrived they noticed two damaged sedans, which had been headed north on Fredericksburg Road, and then officers found the ambulance crashed in some bushes along the southbound lanes of the road.

One of the responding officers said the ambulance apparently “split” the two sedans, hitting both vehicles in the rear, sending them crashing into a traffic light pole.

The ambulance then veered left across Wurzbach Road into the southbound lanes of Fredericksburg Road, and came to rest in the bushes, the officers said.

“It was not city personnel driving the ambulance,” police said. “No apprehensions were made.”

An elderly woman was transported in stable condition to a nearby hospital, while a second woman in her 30s also was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

The ambulance was stolen sometime earlier after an apparent medical call, police said. Though officers at the scene did not know from where it was stolen, and said the theft remains under investigation.
